European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
