Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
