The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
